Chiang Rai Then:
The city of Chaing Rai was founded in 1262 and became the capital of the Mangrai dynasty. Later on Chiang Rai was under Burmese rule for several hundred years and it was not until 1786 that Chiang Rai became part of Siam and Chiang Mai province. In 1922, Chaing Rai was named a Province in its own right. The Golden Triangle was once producing 50% of the Worlds illicit heroin and opium supply and The Golden Triangle was a no-go area for anyone but those with no fear and the military who might want to enforce the ever-changing policies.
Chiang Rai Now:
Chiang Rai is now on the backpacker trail and is popular with tourists visiting the Golden Triangle. It still has many Burmese influences in town including the temples which had previously been built under the Burmese rule. Chiang Rai is a popular destination for tourists wishing to visit the local hill tribes who make up 12.5% of the population of which the Long Neck Tribe or Karen are amongst the most popular. A popular excursion from Chiang Rai is a boat trip by long tail boat (Isuzu truck engine attached to propeller on long canoe) towards Chiang Mai through stunning scenery.
